初めに言（ことば）があった。
言は神と共にあった。 言は神であった。
この言は初めに神と共にあった。
すべてのものは、これによってできた。
できたもののうち、一つとしてこれによらないものはなかった。
この言に命があった。 そしてこの命は人の光であった。
光はやみの中に輝いている。
そして、やみはこれに勝たなかった。

In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things were made through Him,
and without Him nothing was made that was made.
In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
And the light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness did not comprehend it.

どうして自分の目にある梁（はり）には気がつかないのですか。
自分の目にある梁が見えずに、どうして兄弟に、
「兄弟。あなたの目のちりを取らせてください。」と言えますか。

まず自分の目から梁を取りのけなさい。
そうしてこそ、兄弟の目のちりがはっきり見えて、
取りのけることができるのです。

And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye,
but do not perceive the plank in your own eye ?
Or how can you say to your brother,
' Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,
'
when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your
own eye ?
Hypocrite!
Fiest remove the plank from your own eye,
and then you will see clearly to remove the speck
that is in your brother's eye.

さて、イエスは、悪魔の試みを受けるため、
御霊（みたま）に導かれて荒野に上って行かれた。
そして、40日40夜断食した後で、空腹を覚えられた。
すると、試みる者が近づいてきて言った。
「あなたが神の子なら、この石がパンになるように命じなさい。」
イエスは、答えて言われた。
「 『人はパンだけで生きるのではなく、神の口から出る1つ1つの
ことばによる』 と書いてある。 」

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness
to be tempted by the devil.
And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights,
afterward He was hungry.
Now when the tempter came to Him, he said,
"If your are the Son of God, command that these stones
become bread."
But he answered and said,
"It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'
"
人は、たとい全世界を手に入れても、
まことのいのち（英語ではsoul ）を損じたら、何の得がありましょう。
そのいのちを買い戻すのには、人はいったい何を差し出せばよいでしょう。
